Frontier models in 2026 set the ceiling on agent capability. They're the only models that reliably handle 50+ tool sets, hour-long contexts, and the kind of judgment that makes autonomous mode safe.
The trade-off is cost and rate limits. Frontier models cost 5–20× more per token than smaller alternatives. Most production stacks use frontier models for planning and a smaller model for the bulk of routine calls.
