Our take on each

AI-900: Azure AI Fundamentals

Microsoft

The most accessible vendor AI cert in 2026. Foundational level — designed for non-engineers (PMs, business analysts, sales engineers) who need vocabulary. Recognized by enterprises running Azure but limited signal outside that ecosystem.

AI-102: Azure AI Engineer Associate

Microsoft

The engineering-grade Azure AI cert. Covers Cognitive Services, OpenAI on Azure, vision, language. Strong recognition inside Microsoft partner ecosystem; mixed elsewhere. The 1-year validity with free renewal is a positive — keeps the credential aligned with the field's pace.

AWS Certified AI Practitioner

AWS

AWS's newer foundational AI cert (launched 2024). Cheaper and broader than the ML Specialty. The decision factor: does your role / team / target employer care about AWS-specific knowledge? If yes, take it. If you're cloud-agnostic, the recognition outside AWS partner shops is limited.

AWS Certified Machine Learning Engineer — Associate

AWS

The hands-on engineering cert for SageMaker / Bedrock workloads. Heavy on AWS-specific patterns; the underlying ML knowledge transfers, but the exam is AWS-locked. Strong signal inside AWS shops; less signal outside.

Generative AI Leader

Google Cloud

Google's answer to AI-900. Newer, less mature ecosystem of training material, but a strong fit if your stack runs on GCP / Vertex AI. The Foundational level is genuinely beginner-friendly; the exam is short (50 questions, 90 minutes).

NVIDIA-Certified Associate: Generative AI LLMs

NVIDIA

The most vendor-neutral of the major cloud-vendor AI certs in 2026 (NVIDIA hardware is everyone's stack). Covers transformer architecture, fine-tuning, inference optimization, RAG. Good signal for ML / MLOps engineers; recognition is highest in shops doing model training at scale.

Frequently asked questions

Are AI certifications worth it in 2026?+

It depends entirely on your audience. For engineers at companies that use a specific cloud (AWS, Azure, GCP), the matching vendor cert is a positive resume signal and often reimbursed by employers. For freelancers, consultants, or engineers at cloud-agnostic shops, the ROI is lower — a portfolio of shipped AI projects is more compelling than any single cert. The exception is the foundational tier (AI-900, AI Practitioner): these are cheap, fast, and signal "I have basic AI literacy" to non-technical hiring managers.

Which AI cert is most recognized?+

Microsoft's AI-102 and AWS's ML Engineer Associate are the most established and most-listed in job descriptions. NVIDIA's Generative AI cert is the most vendor-neutral. The newer foundational certs (AWS AI Practitioner, GCP Generative AI Leader) are climbing in recognition but still trail.

Do I need both a cloud cert AND an AI cert?+

For most engineering roles: yes, if you're committing to a cloud platform. The AI certs assume the underlying cloud skills (deploying services, managing identity, networking) — taking the AI cert without a cloud foundation is doing it backwards. The Associate cloud certs (AWS SAA, Azure Administrator) are the typical pre-req.

What about Anthropic / OpenAI certifications?+

As of mid-2026, Anthropic has shipped a Claude Builder Certification and OpenAI has a more informal Cookbook+badges system. Both are free and emerging — they're not yet at the recognition level of the cloud-vendor certs, but they're likely to grow in 2026-2027. We list them on the relevant topic pages (e.g., /learn/build-ai-agents) rather than this comparison page until the certification programs mature.

How long should certification prep take?+

Foundational certs: 15-30 hours for someone with no prior cloud experience; 5-10 for someone with the underlying cloud knowledge. Associate certs: 80-160 hours of prep for first-time exam takers. Plan a 6-12 week study window for an Associate cert alongside a full-time job.
